What Is the UK Minimum Wage?

The National Minimum Wage (commonly referred to as the Minimum Wage) is the lowest hourly pay rate that employers can legally provide to their employees.

The Minimum Wage applies to employees aged 16-22 and apprentices, with rates varying depending on age. Once an employee turns 23, they become eligible for the National Living Wage, which is higher than the Minimum Wage.

2025 Minimum Wage Rates

From April 2025, the new wage rates are as follows:

  • Living Wage (aged 23+): £12.21 per hour

  • Minimum Wage (16-22 years old): Specific rates apply depending on age and apprenticeship status.

These updates were announced in October 2024, giving employers six months to implement the changes.

Who Does the Minimum Wage Apply To?

The UK Minimum Wage is for:

  • Employees aged 16-22

  • Apprentices, regardless of age, with lower rates depending on their training stage

  • The Living Wage is for anyone aged 23 or older.

It’s important to note that these statutory rates are a legal obligation—failing to meet them can result in significant penalties for employers.

Why and When Does the Minimum Wage Increase?

The Minimum Wage changes annually on April 1st, typically announced the prior October. This gives employers time to adjust payroll systems and plan budgets.

The 2025 increase is largely driven by inflation and the rising cost of living. As prices for goods and services climb, wage increases aim to help employees maintain a basic standard of living.

For example, the National Living Wage increased from £11.44 to £12.21 to address the cost-of-living crisis and align with government recommendations from the Low Pay Commission.

What’s the Difference Between the Living Wage and the Minimum Wage?

  • The National Minimum Wage applies to employees aged 16-22 and apprentices.

  • The National Living Wage is higher and applies to employees aged 23 or older.

While both rates are set by the government, the Living Wage reflects the income necessary to meet basic needs for most working adults.
